Before and After
The beginning of the painting
As usual, I went through the process of sketching, ideation, and mock ups until the owners were happy with the concept. The original design was a cheerful chicken holding a bowl of rice, with text saying "Khao Mun Gai" meaning "Thai-style chicken rice".
Having fun painting in the sun
The wall was made of wood panels which we had to coat with primer before drafting the outline and filling it in. Painting on an uneven surface could be challenging and time-consuming, however, it was a fun journey. The restaurant owners even joined me to paint when they got a chance. Throughout the process, we got great supports and interests from people walking and driving by.
We were so close to the finish when...
We found out later about Watertown's regulations for signage and outdoor decorations. In short, we couldn't have anything that promotes the business on an outdoor mural. Instead of erasing the whole wall, we worked with the town zoning department to modify the design so that it would comply with the rules. So, here we are, with an even more cheerful chick and its new friend, wishing everyone a good day!
